MOTOGIRO D’ITALIA 2025 (34^ edition)

The Motogiro d’Italia Celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Moto Club Terni
Start and finish in Pesaro – stages also in Terni and San Benedetto del Tronto 1500 kilometers divided into six legs

This year’s Historical Re-enactment of the Motogiro d’Italia will be a special edition, celebrating the centenary of the Moto Club Terni. The event will take place from May 18th to 24th, with the start and finish in Pesaro. This thirty-fourth edition of what has been for years the world’s largest touring event dedicated to vintage motorcycles is organized, as it has been since 1989, by the Moto Club Terni L.Liberati – P.Pileri in collaboration with the Italian and International Motorcycle Federations. The event is included in the world calendar as the first Raid Vintage trial.

The over one hundred and fifty participants, sixty percent of whom are foreign and come from five continents, will gather on Sunday, May 18th in Pesaro for the preliminary procedures and technical checks. Then, on Monday, the first stage will begin with a “daisy” route that, after 212 km, will bring the competitors back to Pesaro.

This is a tribute not only to the city but also to Benelli, the historic motorcycle manufacturer from Pesaro which, in 1953, won the first edition of the Motogiro d’Italia with Leopoldo Tartarini riding the “Leoncino”.

From the Marche city, on Tuesday the 20th, the “Motogirini” caravan will reach Terni via the Colfiorito and Somma passes, arriving in the “city of steel” in the mid-afternoon after covering 260 km.

The third stage will be a tribute to the organizing Moto Club on the occasion of its centenary and will see the participants travel far and wide through the province of Terni, with incursions into the Viterbo area and the northern part of the province of Rome, concluding after 259 km in Piazza Tacito in the heart of the city, where the Motogiro village will be set up.

Numerous events are planned for the occasion, organized in collaboration with the municipality and other local associations, to best celebrate the century of the Terni motorcycle club.

The fourth leg, covering 270 km, will take the competitors from Terni to San Benedetto del Tronto, along a largely new route that will wind almost entirely through the Reatine and Abruzzo mountains, climbing over the Campotosto pass and then descending to the Adriatic coast with arrival on the San Benedetto del Tronto seafront.

This city will also host the caravan for two days; in fact, the fifth stage of 255 km includes departure and arrival in the same Adriatic town, after crossing important historical centers such as Recanati, Loreto, and Osimo.

The departure from San Benedetto will be on Saturday, May 24th for the final leg which, with its 286 km, is also the longest of this edition of the Motogiro. It will cross the entire Marche region from south to north, touching various tourist resorts on the Adriatic coast.

The arrival of the first competitors in the village set up in Piazza del Popolo in Pesaro, a veritable parade of motorcycles that have made the history of world motorcycling, is scheduled for 4:30 PM.

To meet the requests of the competitors, the organizers have decided to revise the categories of the vehicles in the race, increasing them compared to previous years. The Historical Re-enactment, the most prestigious category, is divided into two classes: one reserved for motorcycles built between 1950 and 1958 with a maximum displacement of 175 cc, directly recalling the years when the speed-based Motogiro was run, and the other for vehicles built from 1959 to 1969, when the event was revived with the “regularity” formula after the abolition of all speed races on roads open to traffic, following the De Portago accident at the Mille Miglia.

Another category of significant historical interest is the Heritage, a true traveling motorcycle museum with vehicles of all displacements built between 1914 and 1949. Then there is the Classic category, reserved for motorcycles of all displacements built from 1970 to 1990, featuring the first Japanese factory bikes, as well as the Motogiro category for vehicles of any displacement built after 1991. The unique Scooter class will also be at the start, followed by the Touring class, which sees many enthusiasts on all types of motorcycles following the same route but out of the competition rankings, while still respecting the roadbooks and the various time checks.

As per tradition, former motorcycling champions will also be at the start, on this occasion led by world champions Pier Paolo Bianchi and Eugenio Lazzarini, and multiple Italian cross champion Italo Forni, as well as personalities from the world of television and entertainment, and correspondents from the specialized press from all over the world, including journalists from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Argentina.

Among the motorcycles, in addition to the traditional 175 CC Italian brands that dominated this displacement in the 1950s, such as Benelli, Ducati, Guzzi, Gilera, Mondial, MV Agusta, Bianchi, etc., there will also be late 1960s Norton Commandos brought to the races by a group of Norwegians and Swedes, and some wartime Triumphs from an English group.

Another interesting detail is the presence of a team of six young Belgian competitors riding 50cc Cimatti motorcycles and three Argentinians, including a woman, Ludmilla Nekola, all riding 1955 Tehuelche 75cc bikes. Tehuelche was the only Argentinian motorcycle manufacturer, founded by an Italian immigrant engineer who transformed a refrigerator factory into a motorcycle factory, equipping it with an innovative, all-aluminum, gear-driven engine of his own design.

The Historical Re-enactment of the Motogiro 2025 is organized in collaboration with the province of Terni and the municipalities of Pesaro, San Benedetto del Tronto, and Terni; with the patronage of the municipalities of Anguillara Sabazia, Loreto, and Senigallia.

The event is also supported by: Misano World Circuit, Food Distribution by Serafini, SRF Spedizioni, Stegagno Trasporti S.P.A., and Benelli Q.J., the official supplier of motorcycles for the press and technical staff.
